I’m just starting my career this fall and am nervous about sounding professional. I have a high pitched voice that makes me sound a lot younger than I really am. I try to lower my voice when giving presentations or when speaking over the phone...because I’ve found people don’t take me as seriously when I speak in my natural tone of voice. Any suggestions?

HI there.  You’re right to realize that communication style goes a long way towards being taken seriously.  It’s important to speak with confidence, knowledge, and purpose, whether it’s in your regular voice or a deeper voice.  The standard response is that you should be yourself.  But if your regular voice makes you hesitate and become insecure even before you open your mouth, then you might want to look into vocal exercises you can do or speak to a coach about using your own style to your best advantage.  (I have no idea what even exists out there so these are just ideas.) It’s no different then taking presentation classes, or writing classes, or any other skill that would help you in your career and build confidence.  Good luck!!
